Frequently asked questions

Last updated October 7, 2026

Here are the answers to what we get asked most. How a game works, step by step, is on How to play.

Getting started

Does it cost anything?

No. Right now it costs nothing to create or play a game. You don't need a payment card, an app or an account.

Do we need to download an app?

No. HowFarOff runs in the browser and works on iPhone, Android and computers. Friends scan the QR code with their camera, or go to howfaroff.com and type in the game code.

If you want the game close at hand, you can add it to your home screen from the browser menu, but you don't have to.

Do I need an account?

No, anyone can play as a guest with just a name. With an account, your stats and achievements (29 of them) are saved to a profile. An account is a player name and a four-digit PIN, with no email address.

If you played as a guest, you can create an account afterwards and save the game to it within 30 days.

How many people can play?

From two up to 20 players in the same game, each on their own phone. If you play in teams, you can have up to 6 teams.

On top of that, up to 10 screens can show the game without playing, such as a TV or a computer sharing its screen in a video call.

Do we need a TV?

No, all you need is a phone each, and the host can play from their own. A big screen makes the reveal more fun for everyone in the room, but it's not required.

If you have a TV or computer: choose Big screen when you create the game, or open howfaroff.com/tv/CODE on the screen, where CODE is the game code.

The game

How many questions are there?

A game has 5, 10, 15, or 20 questions, and the host picks the number. The questions come from 10 categories, and the host chooses which ones to include. Every answer is a number.

New questions are added all the time. If you play again in the same lobby, you get questions you haven't had yet first, and only when those run out do some come back.

Which languages is the game available in?

Swedish and English. Everyone picks their own language for buttons and text, and the host picks the question language in the lobby. Everyone in a game gets the same questions in the same language, because the answers are compared with the same answer key.

Can we play remotely, for example on a video call?

Yes. Create the game on a computer and choose Big screen, then share the tab or screen in Zoom, Teams or Meet. Post the game code in the chat, and everyone goes to howfaroff.com, types in the code and plays on their own phone.

The question and the countdown also show on every phone, so it doesn't matter if the video lags a little.

Is Sips 18+ for everyone?

No, Sips 18+ is for adults. When the host picks the mode, they have to confirm that everyone drinking alcohol is at least 18, and everyone in the lobby sees a reminder. Sips can be taken with any drink – water, soda and alcohol-free work just as well.

The cap is 1–5 sips per question. To play without drinks, there are the Points and Workout modes, with the same questions.

Account, data and help

I forgot my PIN. What do I do?

Accounts have no email address, so the PIN can't be reset automatically. Email us your account name and a few details from your profile, and we'll help you. Exactly what we need is on the contact page.

How to get a new PIN

What is saved about me?

If you play as a guest, the name you type and your results are saved, and the name is deleted automatically 30 days after the game. If you have an account, your player name, your PIN (only as a hash) and your stats are kept until you ask us to delete the account.

The lobby is deleted 2 hours after the last activity. We show no ads, sell no data and use no tracking cookies.
